Our Story
Some businesses are built on opportunity. Ours was built on generations of dedication, resilience, and a genuine passion for caring for garments.
Our Beginnings
Our family’s story began in the late 1930’s on the New South Wales Mid North Coast. Debi’s grandfather, James “Jim” Watts, managed the Quirindi Hospital Laundry while Debi’s grandmother Thelma worked alongside him. During those years, the region endured some of the worst flooding in its history. The repeated floods devastated the community and had a profound impact on the Watts family, particularly one of James and Thelma’s children, whose health suffered after being caught in the floods.
Following medical advice, Jim made the life-changing decision in 1957 to move his family to Sydney, where he accepted a position with the Clyburn Railway Cleaning Services in Auburn. It was a decision driven by love, determination and the hope of creating a better future for his children.

A Family Trade
Dry cleaning soon became firmly woven into the fabric of the family. Debi’s grandmother on her father’s side, Thelma, went on to manage a dry-cleaning business in Merrylands, while on Debi’s mother’s side, her grandmother, Gladys, worked in both the Paddington and Strathfield laundries. Garment care wasn’t simply a job—it became the family’s trade, their livelihood and, ultimately, their legacy.
That passion was carried forward by Debi’s father, Barry. At just 21 years of age, he purchased his first business, Enfield Drycleaning, before establishing and operating several successful dry-cleaning businesses throughout New South Wales, including Express Drycleaners at Green Valley, Granville Drycleaners Depot, Watts & Daughters Drycleaning in Campbelltown, Express Drycleaning in Camden, Flowerdale Drycleaners and Hills Drycleaners.
For Debi, dry cleaning wasn’t something she discovered later in life—it was simply how she grew up. From a young age she accompanied her parents to work, learning the craft firsthand. By just 14 years old, she was helping her father establish new businesses and developing the meticulous attention to detail and work ethic that continue to define her today.
Community Impact
One of the most unforgettable moments in the family’s journey came in 1977 when Barry and Debi witnessed the tragic Granville Rail Disaster. Their Granville Drycleaners Depot, located directly opposite Granville Railway Station, became an important communication point for emergency services during the rescue effort. It was a powerful reminder that local family businesses often become part of the communities they serve.

Industry Expertise
In 1988, the family relocated to Queensland, where they established Five Star Drycleaners in Nundah. It truly became a family enterprise, with Barry, Margaret, Debi, Debi’s sisters and later Debi’s own children all working together. Even after Barry and Margaret retired, their passion for the industry couldn’t keep them away for long, and they returned to open Brisbane VIP Drycleaners.
In 1999, Debi returned to Sydney, where she managed Hangout Drycleaning at Bondi Beach, further expanding her experience and refining the specialist skills that had been passed down through generations. Throughout her career, she also served as the Assistant Technical Director of the Drycleaning Institute of Australia, where she taught future dry-cleaning professionals and wrote industry training curricula. These roles allowed her to share her knowledge while continuing to master the science and artistry of garment care.
The DJ's Bridal Era
After decades of experience across every aspect of the industry, Debi recognised there was a need for a business dedicated exclusively to the care of wedding gowns. In 2014, together with her husband John and the help of her daughter Amanda, she founded DJ’s Bridal—with the ”D” representing Debi and the “J” representing John. Their vision was simple: to create a specialist company focused solely on cleaning, restoring and preserving wedding gowns to the highest possible standard.
Today, Debi is the driving force behind DJ’s Bridal and brings more than 45 years of specialist dry-cleaning experience to every gown entrusted to her care. Having personally cleaned, restored and preserved thousands of wedding gowns, she has earned multiple industry awards and built a reputation for exceptional craftsmanship. Her expertise in delicate fabrics, intricate embellishments, stain removal, restoration and museum-quality preservation has made DJ’s Bridal one of Australia’s most trusted names in wedding gown care.
Today, DJ’s Bridal represents more than 80 years of family knowledge, craftsmanship and dedication passed through four generations. Every wedding gown we clean, restore and preserve carries someone’s most treasured memories, and we never forget the responsibility that comes with that trust.
